John 'Catfish' Juliano

Catfish was a well-traveled musical wanderer. His innate ability to uplift every musician that he came in contact with was one of his greatest gifts to the world.

Never intimidated by a tune and always there to offer anyone a moment of growth while on stage or one on one. A teacher unrecognized by the outside world.

Those who knew him knew his infinite value. An impromptu lesson always awaited anyone that crossed his path.

Catfish rolled into the Athens music scene in the early 90’s, showing up at open mics and always willing to play last, where his virtuosity had room to flourish. Quickly paired with every musician imaginable, he was off to the races.

Leading and backing acts on various stringed instruments. His gifts were apparent and he gave them freely. Some would even say his music was his soul’s purpose on this planet. To share, give, and uplift. He worked hard, practiced harder, and always held himself to the high standard he placed on others.

Over his lifetime, Catfish was a part of countless bands. Initially launching from Cleveland, he ended up traveling all around the United States in his earlier years. He loved many different genres of music and could add almost any stringed instrument to any style of music that played before him.

After settling in Athens later on, he could be seen playing at Casa Nueva, Smiling Skull, Blue Gator, and Jackie O’s most often.

A few of the Athens bands he inhabited included The Paranormals, Stella, The Hutchinson’s, Slim Pickens, The Lennon Orchestra, and Joe Bob Billy and the Texas Alien.

His musical impact was vast and created a ripple effect throughout the Athens community. His beautiful smile and dark wit will be remembered forever.
