Athens Artists Memorial Project Board Training Jim Mahoney Athens OH

Thanks to our board member Dawn Graham, we (AAMP) were awarded a grant through The Athens Foundation to pursue non-profit training for our board of directors. Dawn found Jim Mahoney, who had the perfect credentials and experience to lead us in our training.

Jim Mahoney (pictured below) has dedicated his life to education, serving as a county superintendent, superintendent, principal, and teacher, as well as an adjunct professor at OU.

In 2001, he joined Battelle for Kids, as the organization’s first executive director. Under Jim’s 15 years of leadership, Battelle for Kids grew into a national not-for-profit organization that partners with school districts, state departments of education, business, and philanthropic organizations.

Jim has made presentations throughout the U.S., Canada, and China on a variety of topics; authored the book, To Lead is to Teach: Stories and Strategies from the Classroom to the Boardroom; and has had articles printed in several state and national publications.

He also has been recognized on numerous occasions for his leadership including being inducted into The Ohio State University’s College of Education and Human Ecology Hall of Fame, receiving the Ohio University Voinovich School Leadership in Public Innovation Award, and more.

Thanks to another board member, Stephanie, we were able to conduct our training comfortably in one of StewMac’s excellent conference room. Thanks to StewMac – a great friend to AAMP!

Our board learned a great deal about non-profit management and leadership with Jim’s friendly guidance, always keeping the focus on AAMP’s mission and purpose and exploring how best to meet our goals.

Amid the excellent instruction, we also celebrated with pizza and chocolate muffins (thanks again Dawn!) in honor of our new board President’s birthday!

We left this training feeling not just that we had received some excellent instruction and guidance, but generally as a group, more excited than ever to help offer more opportunities for the residents of SE Ohio to participate in and experience music and the arts, and we look forward to an additional training with Jim in the near future!
